Siberia & Baikal
Really vast spaces of virgin boreal forests, rapid rivers, spiritual shamans and greedy petroleum producers, the Siberian Pearl - Baikal and the magnificent Altai golden mountains, the land of adventurers and Russia’s «Botany Bay» - that is Siberia.
The historical Circum-Baikal Railway which was built in the 19th century as part of the world-famous Trans-Siberian Railway now holds tours using retro Soviet steam locomotive trains.
Due to its geographical location and poor infrastructure, Siberia has always been a hard area to access for large cinematographic crews. However, because of its unique and untouched locations, it is quite popular among documentary filmmakers and small, mobile film crews with compact equipment.
Also, if you are in need of a Siberian view and feel for your project, then you can probably find it in the North-West of Russia as well as the city of Murmansk, which boasts boreal forests and depressing city landscapes. Another place to consider is the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, which has really stunning mountain views together with soviet-style cities and landmarks.
